Red Ring

"The Glitch"

The Bio

Real Name: Gregory Pool
Villain Name: Red Ring
Title: The Glitch
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Race: Meta-human
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown/Pure Red
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 185 lbs.
Blood type: O+

The Looks

Gregory "Greg" Pool is a somewhat tall, fairly good-looking man with jet black, slicked back hair, dark brown eyes, and a kind of round head, with pale skin, and a ski-slope nose. His build is fairly skinny, with no muscle to be noted. In his every day life, being a state attorney in Chicago, he generally wears a suit and tie. When not on duty, he just wears whatever he finds lying around.

His Avatar, however, is nearly completely different. Their height is the same, but this is where the similarities end. Black skin, with pure, bright red eyes, hands blood red and cracked. A metallic "red ring of death" symbol lies on his chest - this emblem being his signature, which can be found on all crime scenes connected. His legs and feet are blood red fading to black, and his eyes are pure, bright red. The Avatar has no nose or mouth, adding to the uncanny feel of the whole thing - especially when the Avatar speaks. Physically, the figure does appear much stronger than they actually are; they have the same level of real physical toughness as Greg's "real" body does, except for the powers they can access in this form.

Notably, on occasion, the Avatar "glitches," distorting briefly; this takes various forms, but it's most commonly an inversion of the Avatar's colors - black turning to red and vice-versa. He can sometimes visibly cringe during these "glitches." These "glitches" last longer and happen more often when certain powers are being used, and/or in moments of negative emotion.

The Personality

Gregory puts on a masquerade during his day job. He acts generally pleasant, friendly, eager to strike up a conversation. He's a bit of a video game nerd, and often makes references he doesn't always expect everyone to get. He, however, does show a level of disdain for vigilantes - and it's obvious why. The only time he's dead serious is when he's in a court room, where he can be as ruthless and manipulating as he needs to be.

Behind closed doors, and as the Red Ring, he's definitely someone else. Brutal, unforgiving, cold. He brutally attacks people who get in his way, and strikes without mercy. Whilst in fights, he tears apart everything he knows about his opponent. Their motivations. Their anxieties. Their fears. Their secrets. All this and more, as long as he knows. And he prefers to learn as much about his targets as possible before striking, turning learning about his opponents into something borderlining on obsessive. He usually attempts to connect the dots to figure out secret identities, or others who might know the truth, to use that to his advantage.

When acting in such a manner, it's quite obvious to see why he's so good at hiding his identity. However, he prefers not to go into direct conflict if he can help it - he's not terribly resilient. He's nearly entirely sociopathic, the only one he still truly cares about being his own mother. He's grown cold and distant to the rest of the world; he just refuses to show it in his daily life. Finally, he can act somewhat sadistic towards his foes, generally enjoying tormenting and angering his opponents while dodging or blocking attacks.

The Story

Growing up, Gregory Pool was a normal kid with a bright future. His parents were respected business owners, and it seemed likely that he would end up owning the family business. They have done some shady business agreements, but he never thought anything of these agreements - he thought they were just doing what's best.

That all changed, of course, when a vigilante showed up.

It was before the New York Assault. He still isn't entirely sure how it happened. All he knows, is the result. Vigilante justice was delivered, and the recipient was his own father. And what crime did he commit? Running a business in Chicago? As far as he knows, that's all he's been doing. This ends up being the start of his bitter feelings towards vigilantes, and other "heroes" dispensing justice outside the system. He began believing them crooked, and not deserving of their power. But, he assumed, there was nothing he could do to catch them - however, he did end up going to law school, and eventually, became a state attorney. He's still not entirely sure what drew him to law school...Maybe it was just that he's good at it. Maybe it was just the thought of putting a vigilante behind bars in this manner.

Then, he discovered his powers, about one year ago. He never stopped to take one more rational thought about what he was going to do with them. These vigilantes who think they're "heroes" have got to go, and the current system wasn't efficient enough. Why else would he have these powers if not for this? And so, he decided, to take to sending a message to these supposed heroes as the Red Ring.

The Priority

1. Reaction
2. Agility
3. Endurance
4. Strength

The Powers

1. Avatar - Gregory's only ability usable when an Avatar is not already present. Gregory physically enters a computer(MUST be a full computer, he can't hop into a cell phone and get outta here), turning into pure data. From here, he can generate an Avatar in the real world - which appears in front of the computer, likely directly where Greg was standing - which can use the rest of his available powers. This Avatar can talk, walk, and pretty much do anything Gregory's physical body can do, along with...Other properties, explained below.

Gregory has control over the Avatar, and sight from it's eyes, as if it were his own body. The Avatar can be recalled at any time, at which point he will be booted from the computer, his body transferring from data back to his original form. He will also be booted if the Avatar sustains critical damage. If he is booted by the Avatar sustaining critical damage, he cannot create another Avatar for a half an hour. Attempting to will only result in severe feedback and a headache for the rest of the day. He learned this the hard way.

2. Glitch Beam - The Red Ring Avatar can fire a continuous beam of flashing red and black from his palm. This beam does a moderate amount of damage, nothing special for a beam attack when compared to other supers, and fires for 5 seconds at a time. As the Avatar's melee strength isn't terribly powerful, this is Gregory's preferred method of attack.

3. Antivirus - The Red Ring Avatar can activate Antivirus Mode. In Antivirus Mode, the Avatar cannot walk, but has a high physical resilience, their skin becoming as hard as solid concrete. The frequency and strength of "glitching" in this state also increases. However, the Red Ring Avatar can raise his hand to fire Glitch Beams, despite not being able to move otherwise. The shift into Antivirus mode requires 10 seconds of uninterrupted concentration, which he may not have during a fight - however, shifting out requires only 5 seconds.

4. Ghost - The Red Ring Avatar cannot be seen on cameras or recordings. If the Avatar speaks while audio is being recorded, rather than his actual voice, instead, a loud glitch will be heard when the recording is played. If Gregory wishes, he can push more energy, and make himself glitch more, to allow himself to appear on recordings, but the minute he stops focusing on it, it stops, and he still cannot make his voice heard from audio recordings.

5. Digital Body - While the Red Ring Avatar does take damage from attacks, it doesn't show until critical damage is done, at which point the Avatar crumbles and Gregory is ejected from the computer he's operating from.

The Weaknesses

1. Error - Whenever the Red Ring Avatar glitches, Gregory feels a bit of pain, and when feeling negative emotions, and while using some of his powers, the Avatar glitches more frequently, and more powerfully. This glitching pain can serve as a distraction for Gregory, or, if you somehow managed to get it strong enough, might even make him pass out, booting him from the computer and automatically shutting down the avatar with critical damage.

2. Only Human - When not controlling an Avatar, Gregory himself is just an ordinary human. If you figure out who he really is, and then catch him during his ordinary life? He's toast. His physical strength outside of his Avatar form is below even civilian standards.

3. Shocking - If the Red Ring Avatar is electrocuted, and Gregory is not in Firewall Mode, he will suffer from major, painful feedback. If timed just as a glitch is occurring, critical damage will be sustained, causing the Avatar to dissipate and Gregory to be violently ejected from the computer.

4. Crash - If Gregory is inside a computer, and it's damaged in any way while he's in there, Gregory is harmed as well. If you destroy the computer, he's dead. That's it.

5. Connected - Any injuries present on Gregory's body are present on the Red Ring Avatar's until he's healed. For example, if you break Greg's arm, the Red Ring Avatar will have a broken arm until he's healed. In the other direction, any strikes that hit the Red Ring Avatar will cause pain in Greg, despite not visibly damaging the Avatar.

The Items

Spray Can - It's not really much. I don't see a reason for it needing a weakness or anything. Just a dark red spray can, to brand his crime scenes with the Red Ring of Death symbol. Add to the mind games.

Red Ring Empty Re: Red Ring

Post by Thorgron March 23rd 2017, 9:11 am

So this mostly checks out, I've just got a few things to clarify and this guy should be good to go.

First it says in his personality that he obsesses over finding information on people he's going up against. While that's fine, make sure you talk to other RPers before just deciding that you know everything about their characters. It's important to some characters stories that certain things remain secret, so just make sure that ends up being a conversation not just you deciding that you know something.

My only other thing that needs explaining here is how his main two abilities work. So like, he becomes data and hops into a computer. Does that do anything? Or is it literally just what he has to do in order to become Red Ring? And speaking of Red Ring, how does he manifest? Does he appear next to the computer that Gregory jumps into and then can just walk around like normal?

For that first part, of course.

For the second part, just how he becomes Red Ring, yeah.

For the third part, the Red Ring Avatar forms in front of the computer - likely right where Gregory was standing when he entered it.
