Character Profile

Alignment Justification:
Chaotic Neutral individuals tend to prioritize freedom over morality. Which works perfectly, since Matthew tends to present himself as entirely amoral. He is outside the morality spectrum of good and evil. He is perfectly aware that some of his acts would be classified by others as "Evil", but he himself tends to deny any form of "moral credence" to decide his actions for him. Free-spirits and sometimes even lunatics.

Chaotic Neutral individuals are typically trope as hedonists, tricksters and most vigilantes actually fall into this category if they aren't in some way good aligned. In the case of Matthew it's primarily due to his "amorality" and the severity of his actions being so foreign and alien to most that his morality may as well be Blue and Orange rather than Black or White. While one could argue that Matthew is a cruel person, nothing he does is without an agenda, or a purpose and is always executed to the most precise and effective method possible, even if this leaves many of his means subject to question.

Personality:

File Note #4:

Understanding Matthew is something even the greatest minds struggle with. He is a truly intelligent young man that seems to hold a bit of an inferiority complex, though remains quite assured of himself when it comes to the areas of his expertise. The only glowing personality traits that are associated with Matthew are "Kind, Generous, Loving and Loyal", and all of these he attributes to his almost crippling sense of Empathy.

While Matthew admits that he bears "Masks of many faces" he traditionally acknowledges that he is perfectly capable of doing morally questionable things if it results in the best possible outcome for all parties involved. Many associate Matthew as a Good person, though there are some who've seen the darker side of his capabilities, whom swear that he is a harbinger of evil.

History:
On record, There's not much is known in the grand scheme of his history. He was born to a family of "Divine-Inspired" Superhumans that claim their powers are manifestations of the protection that their faith offers. While there are five family members present, four have high-profile powers and capabilities, while one was born and left completely devoid of power. Matthew, was the unfortunate soul born and could not manifest any power of capability of a superhuman level by his 13th year. He was always intelligent, though hardly ever driven.  All other metahumans of the family cling to their "Divine-Inspired" powers as a testimony of their God, and his benevolence. Of course, growing up around such impossible power and devout nature is sure to shape one's experience within the world. His father's done everything under the sun. He's former CIA, Professional fisherman, Marine and personal detail at the Embassy in Moscow and now he's turned preacher. Mother was an entrepreneur at heart, always starting businesses and helping them survive in the business world and showing that compassion could come from even the most ambitious.

His brothers were both equally ambitious, but Matthew never was. He was always slow to move, slow to act and didn't have much drive for anything. To look at him it was obvious that he had always felt out of place. It's always easy to feel out of place, especially when you were the one thing in your life that was unlike all the others. Though Matthew began to strive to be of benefit, to be of use to the collective. He had a tendency to be placed in the back seat, ascertaining and running interference and providing a "birds-eye" view as the group's designated "Man-in-the chair" as they called it. He was great for the role; his empathic nature allowed him to predict and even uncover vital information the others would miss. For the first time in his life, he was able to be of use.

After his fifteenth birthday he was reported missing, having run away with a friend Anthony in order to take upon the trained persona of Azrael, a vigilante allied with a being known as Savior. Together they planned to take the world back to a more peaceful and cohabit-able place. Fate would not be so kind. As a human he was greatly outclassed, and eventually he would fake the death of the Vigilante Azrael, after receiving an offer from a cult known as Order of The Blood Moon. There he received training from Tsukuyomi for several years, excelling after having his "Humanity" beaten from him. He would be given his graduate mission to assassinate a knowledgeable woman named Skylar. Having an opportunity, he hesitated and caused himself to miss. His mentor took this as a sign that Skylar was more skilled than they believed. But when he eventually had the ability to kill her face to face, he turned his weapon on his mentor, granting her the ability to escape, before he barely made it out with his life.

His parents scoured the world for him. They prayed, they investigated, and they gave chase. They had no avail in finding him. The very empathic talents he cultivated for his family was the very tool he used to successfully slip away from them, and the local law enforcement.  They did, however pick up trace of him almost seven years later and reunited with him in the city of New York. The reunion was short-lived before Matthew left to pursue his collegiate studies abroad, returning only after several years had passed. He's never truly spoken about those years to much of anyone, having simply dedicated himself to his studies and seemingly becoming a rather well-rounded and intelligent human being for it.

His time abroad was done for more reasons than just college. He was following the path laid before him by Tsukuyomi, intercepting Blood Moon operatives and forming himself as a new vigilante fighter. He mastered the concepts of poisons, built up human resistances and trained his body to the best he could. He studied the concept of infrasound, matter and the biological and psychological markers on a
human being, and many different types of metaphysiology. This led to the creation of his fear toxin, and the prototype for the MFR. Though through all of his studies and the ciphers he found form Blood Moon he had found one thing, eventually, that piqued his interest. He learned that he was something known as "The Empty One".

Eventually, Matthew stumbled upon ancient ruins that Blood Moon once used as a base of operations, when memories of a new life flooded his mind. A life he knew too well, but somehow seemed foreign. He followed the call before becoming infused with a being named Yamm, after his heart stopped and left him clinically dead. He also found an ancient jar that was lost to the annals of time, and deep inside a rumbling evil which would eventually take hold. His adventures with his "alternate incarnation" were a long one, reuniting with family and even having to adopt a child because of Yamm's parentage.

The Jar eventually called to him in a dream and proclaimed that Matthew was not to be the Vessel of Chaos, but it's Vessel instead, offering to grant Matthew the power of his desires. A world without suffering, a world without pain or loss. A world where all could rest and be in peace. Matthew accepted the deal, only to awake to the Jar embedding itself into his chest, between his ribs and molding around his flesh. His body transformed slightly, reducing his age and compacting him to an almost inhuman level of survival. The creature within the jar slowly began to leak out and spread it's influence into Matthew's personality, before both Yamm and the Jar's denizen, The Embodiment of Sin itself, had been expunged, left to take on different hosts, both desiring to return to their chosen vessel.

Matthew's life form that point on was the resolution to slay Sin and to make the world a better place. His primary method of doing so? Back to the basics. As a vigilante he fashioned a terrifying mask, hardened his heart and resolved that if he was unworthy, if he was unable to be the Hero he would become the next best thing. He would become a villain, a villain of all villains and a Symbol of Hope to mankind, and a Symbol of Fear to all beyond it. He became the creature known as Humanity, and recruited a few vigilantes to his side, including Citizen Zero, Kid Khaos and The Legion. His reputation as a murderer eventually led him to being targeted and recruited by Thrones, especially after a mere man and his tools managed to defeat powerful beings like Atlas, Elena Vexus and Lucius Alba.

His life from the outside was pretty plain it would seems He's been dieting a lot, losing weight to pack muscle over the years. He's continued to study medicine and "Stuff" despite no longer participating in surgery or the thankless clinical practice. He's proven to possess the ambition he never had, maybe even more. Though the most interesting development in his life was his most recent employment. He's been utilizing his Psychiatric degree and personal empathic training to manage his patients and even occasionally assist in the profiling and capture of dangerous criminals. Not just for the local police department but the other vigilantes by night. But other than that, he's always kept a low profile, he's seems like... just your average guy.

The Powers

Synesthesia: Matthew was born with keener senses of hearing and smell than most. One of his mother's strange genetic "advantages" granted him this due to his Synesthesia. Synesthesia is a condition in which one sense simultaneously perceived by a secondary sense at the same time. Letters, shapes or numbers also project a sensory effect of scent, smell or visual color. This allows him to better perceive and understand voices, people and other information.

Chaos Theory: Matthew's brain functions differently than others. He is highly intelligent, capable of linking two seemingly unconnected things to reaching a new understanding of information that others couldn't possibly rationalize. This makes him seem superhumanly intelligent and perceptive, and make connections that others can't. To that end it also makes him impossible to read and predict. Even when his actions seem the most straightforward, they are impossible to predict or see, making him a blind spot to even those with metahuman abilities to see the future, read minds or predict movements.

Autonomy: Matthew's hours of training to the unity of body and mind grants the rare ability to control his heart rate, fend off toxins and even enter a death-like trance like seemingly on command.

Advancement 2:

The Weaknesses

Touched: Matthew's brain is fractured, broken. He disguises it rather well and many people don't recognize him for the master manipulator that he is. However, what he can't always hide is his reactions to hallucinations or things that he sees due to underlying mental illness that remains suppressed and untreated.

Empathy's Double-Blade: Matthew knows better than all others that Empathy is a double-sided blade. Empathy is used to connect with and understand people, but it's also able to cut you down and circumvent your own mind. The more Matthew attempts to Empathize with someone, the more his own personality seems to change and mimic the person he is empathizing with.

Tasked and Strained: Matthew continually has to maintain a balance between his daily life and his extracurricular activities. He has to maintain professional rapport with his patients, he has to continue to assist with ongoing investigations and help where he is needed, as well as continue his own dark agenda.

Shadowed Heart: Matthew's heart is dark and shadowed, continually trying to keep in total control of himself and his actions. In addition this generates issues with those that try to get to know him, or try to get any of his emotions elevated.  In addition, when someone has his loyalty or interest, he tends to go to extremes to protect them.

The Wages of Sin: As Sin, Matthew had black blood that was sweet to the taste and incredibly addictive. This caused many to commit heinous acts of crime at even the promise of a drop of his blood. As he has purged Sin from him, he now occassionally enters withdrawl-like state where he needs to lock himself away, or inject some of the old stored blood into his own veins, allowing him to relieve the few moments of peace and bliss that he had felt in his life. This can cause damages to his memory even causing him to forget some of the times he had experienced and causing even more pain with prolonged use.

Hollow Ataraxia: While he may seem calm and serene at almost all times, this is a hollow and empty gesture. He desires to do good, though anything he has ever done has always resulted in evil, a thing he laments. The only "good" he has ever been able to do was bring death to those that cause pain and suffering. He cannot and will not sit by while an innocent is in danger, providing that there is something he can do about it. If he cannot save them, he will try to avenge them.

The Mechanics

Mind Palace: Matthew's hours of meditation, reflection and study have allowed him to unite body and mind. This has caused Matthew's mind to become a nearly impregnable mind palace that is a labyrinth of all the knowledge he's acquired and tormented macabre nature. Matthew is inherently resistant to influence from the minds and illusions. Attempts to read his mind, or pry into it allow him to simply block others and replace the thoughts they hear with surface and superficial thoughts

Master Manipulator: When Matthew seems to be nearly unreadable to those around him. His machinations are his own and many others don't realize they are pieces in his game, until it's too late.

Wealth and Resources: Matthew has access to some of his family's wealth, as well as his own resources from his time with Yamm. He maintains his wealth with his jobs. He gains access to some drugs as a Psychiatrist.

Fighting Skill: Matthew is trained in three different forms of martial arts. The first and most prominent version he employs is Aikido, followed by Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He's also an expert marksman, whose managed to utilize his empathy to project pathways to effectively "hit" people above his class.

Human: Despite some of these strange abilities, each and every one of the abilities listed is something that is achievable by humans and has actively been done amongst humans.

The Arsenal

Eris: A dagger that, in legend, is a fragment of the weapon present when the Void was divided. It was passed to Matthew by Yamm before the divine essence passed to Nihilus. Also known as; The Fang of The Primordial Chaos or Yamm's Dagger.
Item Abilities: A dagger that seems to be unstoppable. It deals damage as it cleaves can knick even the toughest of metahumans easily. Wounds inflicted Heal 80% slower than other wounds and will cause enemies to hallucinate. The dagger is tied to Humanity and will always return to him when called. The blade radiates no special energies and appears mundane to all whom inspect it or have other methods of sensory.
Item Weakness: Weakness One removed with Advancement. The dagger burns it's wielder's hand if they intend to use it against a vampire. The dagger has a mind of it's own, and will not cause lethal damage unless it decides too, which can limit it's owner's movements. The dagger can only be used with the intent of killing someone once every seven days.

Human Stain: A suit of armor that allows for mobility, stealth and still offers impressive levels of protection. This includes contacts that allow him to conceal his identity, a voice modulator and biometric scrubbing.
Item Abilities: Provides protection from ballistics and prevents DNA from getting into the crime scenes. Provides protection from some fire.
Item Weakness: Areas around the joints are less armored in order to keep mobility. Kinetic percussion from bullets can still damage the wearer, so while it stops Bullets from piercing, it still hurts.

Mindfall Remedy: A serum designed to open the mind and unlock one's inhuman potential, used primarily as a last resort in the most dire of situations and serves a plot device for Humanity's plot.
Item Abilities: A serum or aerosol that is inhaled or in into injected bloodstream. It connects Humanity to the "Veil" and temporarily grants him inhuman levels of intellect and processing. In some extreme cases of abuse of the substance it can "connect" him with previous incarnations of himself, allowing him to pull from their powers and abilities. When used on others it may place them in a state of "hypnotic susceptibility" in which even their beliefs can be altered through suggestion. In addition, his strength and durability supersede even most superhuman capabilities. Individuals that have been struck by his Nightmare Toxin will perceive him differently than others granting them insight to the nature of Humanity's being. Many mundane people cannot handle the stress alone of witnessing this as it places too much strain upon them.

Item Weakness: This serum worsens his schizophrenia for several days. It's possible for these "Awareness" he pulls from does not help him. Whenever he acquires a power from a previous incarnation, it will come with a weakness from that individual as well. Abuse of the Mindfall Remedy causes a loss of control over his own actions and sacrificed his autonomy. Many mundane people cannot handle the stress alone of witnessing the "nature" of his being as it places too much strain upon them, so he will never use this in the presence of multiple compromised innocents.

Character Trivia

  • Read the "File Note 4" starting with the last sentence and going up.

  • Matthew's accent changes depending upon the company he is in. His "professional" accent is an odd blend Irish, German and Lithuanian but it's origins are unknown. His "recreational" accent is his standard American English, while operating in the realms of his "extracurriculars" he utilizes a Scandinavian accent, this is due to "Mr.Scratch's" origins to the Old Norse "Skratte" and the fact that Old Norse actually was more Scandinavian in tone rather than Norwegian. When on the radio his talk color turns to reflect his more overly jovial and subtle contortions that he has "via Radio"

  • Matthew was the last "member" of the vigilantes to encounter the strange Frequency at nights, despite all of his scanners.

  • Matthew's abuse of the Mindfall remedy has left him quite a skilled liar, being able to fool even the best detectors, tests and even serums. It also seems to have made it increasingly difficult to attempt mind control.

  • Matthew's seven years that he was missing, when tracked, leave five of them unaccounted for to all records. He appears to have fallen from the face of the earth for four of the years, only appearing back months before being found. He makes no comments about his time missing, or the reasoning for his youthful appearances, actively growing out a beard in attempts to appear older.

  • Matthew favors colored lenses on his sunglasses, opting to match his attire with Red, Purple or Ashy grey lenses.
