Calagari Empty Calagari

Post by Karma November 21st 2010, 3:27 am

Real Name: Carl Wiene
Renegade/Villain Name: Dr. Caligari (I have him slated as renegade because he has no real ulterior motives to dictate him as a villain. He is a scientist who has odd fascinations and no morals. If that dictates him a villain than he is a villain).
Title: The Super Ego
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Age: 42
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Height: 5'8
Weight: 145

Costume Description/Image: Lab coat with a colored shirt, tie, and dress slacks.

Personality: A man vastly interested in psychology and reality. He lacks any interest in relationships or other humans and what they can provide him.

History: Carl discovered his love of the human mind at a young age when doctors diagnosed him with Capgras syndrome. His mother worried because he always insisted she was an impostor at home, but whenever she spoke to him he was fine. His life eventually lead him through college and to his M.D. and Ph.D in neurology. He worked on the parietal lobes of rats and began to learn that their sense of reality could be altered through that lobe. A colleague of his came to him one day with a proposal to enhance his mental powers. He accepted the offer and never thought twice about it. Now instead of simply using machines to distort the parietal lobes of unsuspecting rats, he can now alter the same lobe on humans. He cannot physically alter the reality around him, its all in the head of the victim, and the more they give into the illusion the more power over them he controls. He tested it on lab assistants and staircases. He would alter their perception of stairs and the distance each one possessed, causing the lab assistants to stumble down the stairs. He could eventually lead them to believe that they walked up the walls or on the ceiling. Many assistants needed to be admitted into sanitariums; under the watchful eye or Carl Wiene. Wiene means no harm to those around him, but also means no good either. He is a danger to everyone but himself.

Powers: Caligari can distort the perceived distance between points, making it hard to target him with attacks or engage him. Along with distortion of space he can also distort dimensional space to make objects appear to be moving or moving objects to be stationary. The longer someone is around Caligari the more power that he wields over them. He suffers from Capgras syndrome and cannot remember the faces of people and can only recognize voices. This power can only target one person at a time due to the amount of energy it takes to hold it.

The longer equals stronger is based off of accepting the distortions as reality. As someone experiences it they are more susceptible to believe further alterations. This mainly comes from a literal attack on the brain. He pushes on the parietal lobe to make the lobe no longer function as it should when it creates the three dimensional representation of the world. So just as punching someone over and over causes it to hurt more, pushing the lobe weakens it and gives Caligari the ability to insert what he wants them to believe.

My question is to what limits? Will you have total perceived vision after X amount of time?

Lab assistants aren't aware that Caligari is pressing on them; they just think it's stress. If someone were more aware they would be able to try to put up a resistance or get out of his sight so he couldn't press on them. He can't shoot through walls or force choke the brain through a television monitor. Whether or not they would see just what he suggests in their brain relies on their mental well being at the beginning of the encounter and then goes by how much damage he can do on the brain with his attack. At some point the brain gives up and Caligari takes complete control of what the brain sees, not how it reacts, and as long as he pushes his attack they see what he tells them.

Is there a duration to how long it lasts?

The duration will heal just like any injury. If they stay within a closed area and he actively pushes out on them than the duration is as long as he stays active.

How far can you control the distortion?

They have to be observed.

If someone were to leave this area are they unaffected?

Caligari could no longer press the brain to weaken it or send new suggestions. The brain would regain it's bearings with rest and it would regain it's perception that the Caligari created the illusions. When they encounter Caligari again they would know that Caligari creates illusions, but as the parietal lobe becomes compressed they could slip back into believing the illusion.

Roleplay Sample:

Caligari walked down the sterile, gray halls of the sanitarium. His shoes clicked and echoed, acting as the harbinger of his arrival. He reached into his lab coat and pulled out a key card and slid it, triggering a locking mechanism inside the door. Caligari walked into the padded cell.

"Terribly sorry, I believe I have the wrong room" Caligari turned his back to leave.
"No, doctor. It's me, Julian."

Caligari remembered the voice and the name. He turned back around to look at the young man. "You're a look-a-like. That's why you're locked in here."

"Doctor, if you turn your back you will be able to understand me."

"Right, right." Caligari turned his back to the young man.

"Do you remember me?"

"Aw, yes. I never much cared for you." Caligari turned back to the young man and began to produce a signal from his mind that would reach the man. The young man contorted and twisted on the ground. The young man looked at the wall and saw the bricks moving in conjecture with the door. In the doorway stood a man draped in all black; standing behind him was a window to the outside. The outside was devoid of color. Everything was black and white and spiraling. He screamed out in pain, alerting medical staff to run to his aide. Caligari lifted his hand to hold the staff back . "This young man is experiencing stress induced mania." The young man saw a crowd of featureless humans with pitch white faces and black eyes peering down at him. "Take note of the sweat and the fiber twitches. There is nothing we can do for him now; maybe in a few hours once he has settled down we will attempt talking to him again." Caligari closed the door and looked at one of the lab assistants. "Are you new?"
"Haha, no sir, I'm Amy. I've been here for a year now."
"Oh, now I remember your voice. Yes, Amy." He put his hand on her shoulder. "Yes, I remember now."

Once someone starts to believe the distortions around them they eventually lose control of more and more of their ability to what is real.

The power certainly is unique, I love the irony of the Capgras syndrome and his power.

I do agree with night Longer=Stronger? I suppose one can hear your position and attack in that direction. That flaw is acceptable.

My question is to what limits? Will you have total perceived vision after X amount of time? Is there a duration to how long it lasts? How far can you control the distortion? If someone were to leave this area are they unaffected?

If you can Answer these questions and we'll see if its approved or not.

This seems ok to an extent... I assume only optical stuff is affected, meaning Hearing might set off your location. Alright. this makes sense.

One last question. Area of affect: Can you affect more than one person at a time. If so how many? you said they have to be observed. so you realistically you can only foucus on one or two at a time.

Sorry for the late evaluation. I have had many apps at once to do and yours got lost...

Thanks for reminding me.

He can only make the suggestion against one person at a time. It's easier just to limit it at one and not to open up a Pandora's Box by going on any further.

When it comes to occipital/parietal lobe the easiest way to put it would state that permanently blind people would be harder to deceive, but people who merely close their eyes would still take the parietal damage and their dorsal stream would still sense the distortion.

(Dr. V.S. Rachamadran conducted an experiment to show that the parietal lobes are not connected to the occipital lobes. They share a common junction in the dorsal stream, the structure than starts in the occipital and moves into the parietal lobe and determines actions. If any character ever can use precognition, this is the source of that power.)
