The Personality

Gabriel has a restless mind. Constantly thinking, constantly, needing to be doing something and he is most happy when all of his attention is required for a task. He's the guy that zeroes in on a problem or a project and just lets the rest of the world fade away around him. When, he's not working on something he gets fidgety and nervous.

The Story

Gabe had always been a bright kid. From the time he was little his parents knew this. Math came to him easily, especially real world math, the kind of stuff you could see and interact with. As a young child his parents expected relatively big things of their little angel, he had the brains to do whatever he set his mind to after all. It was an opportunity that neither of them had ever had in life. Not that they were dumb, but they knew that their son could rise higher in the ranks than they could. After all, both of his parents worked in physical labor, they earned enough to get by and provide for the family but life was never easy.

So when Gabe started coming home with D's and failing grades in middle school, his parents knew that something was up. He should have been out performing half the class, not struggling to just get by. What was the matter? Well, a few parent teacher conferences and a meeting with the school principle were very enlightening on the subject. Turned out little Gabe was a trouble maker, a class clown. Night after night when he'd come home assuring his parents that he had no homework began to make a lot of sense now. When confronted about his behavior, he would tell his parents simply that he was bored by school. The things they had him doing were so easy that there was no point in doing them. And when they'd force him to and tell him he was a failure because he hadn't performed the assignment he'd lash out, cause trouble. If they were gonna make his life hell, he'd do the same right back.

Unfortunately his parents couldn't afford to send him to a private school where he would be better challenged and had to try their best to keep him on the "right path" in his studies. It never worked. And as he got older his behavior became worse and worse. Slaps on the wrist became detentions became suspensions. By the time he was sixteen Gabe had been expelled for threatening a teacher who had called him stupid. Obviously his parents were heartbroken. Their son who had started life with so much potential was throwing it away for nothing. his father decided that if he wasn't going to be in school then his only other option was to be put to work. After all, their family struggled financially, it was time Gabe pulled his own weight. So he was hired on at his father's autobody shop. He was instantly in love.

Once more Gabe began to showcase the intelligence his parents had always seen in him. This was real work, real problems to solve and he loved every second of it. By the time he was 18 Gabe was practically running the shop. People were constantly coming in, asking for him specifically to work on their vehicle. Especially the custom jobs. If you wanted it done, Gabe would figure out how to do it. But fortune it seemed would not be in the cards for his family. Around his 19th birthday, his father fell ill. A brain tumor the size of a golf ball was quickly killing him. Without his dad to run the business end of the shop, his family quickly fell back in to poverty. That of course made his medical bills all the more damaging to their fragile economic situation. They ended up selling the garage to help pay for things, but it was only a temporary fix. And once again Gabriel was left idle. Bored and frightened, he began to try to think of a way to help his struggling family. Crime, as it was, was the most appealing option.

Theft more specifically, and just like work in his dad's garage, he was a natural at it. His small build and natural intellect meant he could find holes in security and exploit them. Granted nothing he ever pulled was a major job at this point, but he was still hauling in some considerable cash. And every week he'd take that money back to his mother. If she asked him where it came from, he'd of course lie, telling her that he was selling things for a friend, or he was working on an online business. She knew he wasn't being truthful, but as far as she was concerned, at least he was staying busy and they were staying afloat.

For two years this went on, with Gabriel providing the sole source of income to his household. As much as he hated to admit it, he loved what he was doing. It was adventure and excitement and everything his life had been missing. That was not to mention that it was a constant challenge. Every job was different, every time a new puzzle to solve. It was like a dream. So when he started to gain a reputation among the criminal underground and he was approached with a far more difficult job to pull off, he was on cloud 9. The men who had sought him out wanted to knock over an armored car delivering a considerable amount of money from a large bank out to one of its subsidiaries. Gabe of course was more than up to the task, practically itching to give himself a serious challenge. He was given one month to prepare. And while normally that would have been plenty of time, fate it seemed would not be on Gabriel's side.

Over the course of that month a series of bizarre events began to occur. They started innocent enough. The TV was shut off and turn back on unexpectedly, the toaster would just shut off in the middle of making toast, things of that nature. Gabe would of course investigate but found nothing to explain the occurrences. They were starting to affect his prep for the job as well. His various gadgets and cutters were constantly going on the frits. It got to the point that he could not test any of his equipment as its batteries would inexplicably drain of all charge before he could even turn them on. At one point he went through an entire pack of batteries, testing each of them for charge and finding that all of them were dead. Obviously this puzzled him, but at that time he had other concerns as well. His skin was beginning to turn an unnatural shade of blue. He was just sick, he had to be, he tried to rationalize the events to himself. All the while the date of the armored car job was rapidly approaching.

By the date of the heist, no one in the crew had heard from Gabriel in over two weeks. Calls to his cellphone went straight to voicemail. They even tried his home phone a few times but again got nothing. Most of them assumed that Gabe had bailed, frightened off by the increased risk of the job. Little did they know that he had sent himself into isolation. His appearance and life changed forever by the emergence of his meta-gene...

The Priority

1. Agility
2. Endurance
3. Reaction
4. Strength

The Powers

Imp-Physiology:
While not exactly an imp, Gabe's meta-gene and altered physiology have granted him some physical abilities outside the realm of human. His hearing, as well as his sight, agility and flexibility have all been heightened allowing him to hear more precisely and in a wider range than any human could dream. He can see clearly in all manner of light. He is also capable of some extreme feats of agility, such as scaling rough ceiling surfaces, leaping well over 20 feet straight up, or running on all fours at around 30 mph. Finally his flexibility has been enhanced to the point that he can squeeze himself through any space that his skull will fit through.

"EMP" Field:
This is Gabe's real metahuman ability, the thing that makes his metagene worth writing home about. Gabe's body generates a field around itself with a 100ft. radius that eliminates the functionality of ANYTHING that requires a power source be it electrical, magical, super-science or otherwise. It has no physical effect on the mechanical workings of any device under its effect however any device affected is rendered entirely incapable of drawing power no matter the source. This effect works regardless of the scale of the object or power source, from the tiniest watch battery to a nuclear reactor and beyond, all are rendered useless as no device inside Emp's effective field can draw power from them. This is also true for wires or signals passing through Emp's effective field, they will stop dead once they enter it and are impossible to send out from inside of it.

The Weaknesses

No Off Switch:
Emp is entirely incapable of turning off is main ability as it is active even when he is asleep or unconscious. This of course is a major problem not only to his general well being but to his mental health. Gabe because of his ability is entirely incapable of using any sort of device that requires power in any way. That means no cell phones, no computers, no cars, boats, trains, planes, no power tools, no running water, and so on and so forth. He has been essentially forced into an Amish existence in the modern world. But it gets worse, it also means that he's unintentionally putting large groups of people in danger everywhere he goes, especially if its in a big city. Just by walking around he's turning off cars on the road, blocking out important phone calls, potentially stopping pace makers and cutting life saving power to hospitals. Then turn that scenario on its head. Imagine now that Gabe has been knocked unconscious and needs to be shocked back to life, unfortunately the paddles no longer work. If he ends up needing to be rushed to a hospital, the ambulance can't take him there.

It's Only Temporary:
If an object affected by Emp's ability leaves his field of effect, it is immediately brought back to full functionality with no ill side-effects.

Too Loud!:
Emp's enhanced hearing makes him highly susceptible to sonic based attacks and to loud or high pitched noises in general.

Who Turned Out the Lights?:
Though Emp can see in any manner of light no matter how dark, he cannot differentiate color in low-light scenarios. Furthermore, he is incapable of seeing in situations where there is absolutely no light, in other words total darkness.

Sticks and Stones:
Emp is just as vulnerable to all manner of damage as any normal human would be.

The Items

When out on a heist, Emp tends to carry a backpack with him that contains various non-powered tools such as screw drivers, wrenches, hand drills, hammers, etc.
The Minions

The Fluff

Emp despite his inability to use powered equipment is still incredibly mechanically inclined. Capable of using basic physics, mathematics and mechanical and electrical knowledge to achieve some pretty impressive things.
